Weekend Reading

This weekend, we started a new book--more like a really long poem--Beowulf. It's super exciting as Beowulf takes on Grendel and Grendel's Mom. I like the Dungeons & Dragons like mixture of ultra-violence followed by praise of God. Beowulf is a tough fighter. We're reading the Seamuus Heaney translation. Very cool!

Ah, yes! I read that in college in Western World Lit (Part 1), but not the Seamus Heaney version. Gotta love the Beo!

I was shocked at how into this story he was. I happened to be reading it myself and thought he might like to hear a little bit. I would stop and he would say, "Please Daddy read more!" Music to my ears.

After we finish Beowulf, we'll be reading the Christopher Logue translation of the Iliad. Aidan loves fighters, gods, and monsters stories.

You know, that's the whole point of these stories. They've been engaging the imagination of people over the centuries. Most people heard, rather than read, them. A lot of of it is about fight, about overcoming something. About an adventure. It's great that Aidan is enjoying this, and it's great that you've introduced it!
