I was surprised at how strong the effect was. I used a flash and the kit lens that came with the camera at around 25mm stopped to f 3.5. I figured the flash would give me too much depth of field, but it didn't. When I stopped it down to around 11, the background became completely crisp, which was actually distracting from the focal point of the shot--the smiley balloon.
Amazing the range of shots possible from an SLR as compared to a point and shoot camera.
